Why do you need a producer?
A producer’s role is to help an artist and a song reach their fullest potential. In practical terms, a producer will give you an objective and impartial opinion of your song, and help you refine it until it is where it needs to be creatively and commercially. This might include making suggestions to change elements of the song’s structure or arrangement, or even tweaking lyrics, melody, rhythms and chords. A producer will contribute creatively where necessary, but isn’t there to take creative control – they’re there to challenge you, the artist, into being as creative as possible. A producer will understand the sound you want to achieve, and will ensure that every step of the process is tailored towards getting your specific sound. This can include, but isn’t limited to, choosing the right instruments, microphones and mic positions, coaching you through your takes, suggesting relevant arrangement/production techniques, mixing the song etc.
